Confrontando al extractivismo y al poder corporativo
Defensoras de derechos humanos de todo el planeta defienden sus tierras, medios de subsistencia y sus comunidades ante las industrias extractivas y el poder corporativo. Ellas hacen frente a fuertes intereses económicos y políticos que promueven el robo de tierras, el desplazamiento de comunidades, la pérdida de los medios de subsistencia y la degradación del medioambiente.
¿Por qué resistir a las industrias extractivas?
El extractivismo es un modelo económico y político de desarrollo que mercantiliza la naturaleza y prioriza la ganancia por sobre los derechos humanos y el medioambiente. Arraigado en la historia colonial, refuerza las desigualdades sociales y económicas tanto a nivel local como global. Muchas veces, las mujeres negras, rurales e indígenas son las más afectadas por el extractivismo, y además son notablemente excluidas de la toma de decisiones. Desafiando estas fuerzas patriarcales y neocoloniales, las mujeres se alzan en defensa de los derechos, las tierras, las personas y la naturaleza.
Riegos críticos y violencia específica de género
Las defensoras que enfrentan a las industrias extractivas, experimentan una diversidad de riesgos, amenazas y violaciones, incluidas la criminalización, la estigmatización, la violencia y laintimidación. Sus historias dan cuenta de marcados aspectos de violencia sexual y de género. Entre los perpetradores se incluyen autoridades estatales y locales, las corporaciones, la policía, el ejército, las fuerzas paramilitares y de seguridad privada, y en algunos casos, sus propias comunidades.

AWID y la Coalición Internacional de Mujeres Defensoras de Derechos Humanos (WHRDIC por su sigla en inglés) tienen el placer de anunciar «Defensoras de derechos humanos confrontado al extractivismo y al poder corporativo»; un proyecto interregional de investigación que documenta las experiencias vividas por las defensoras de Asia, África y América Latina.
Alentamos a activistas, integrantes de movimientos sociales, la sociedad civil organizada, donantes y responsables de políticas públicas, a leer y utilizar estas producciones para el trabajo de incidencia, con fines educativos y como fuente de inspiración:

«Defensoras de derechos humanos confrontando a las industrias extractivas: un panorama de los riesgos críticos y las obligaciones en materia de derechos humanos» es un informe sobre políticas desde la perspectiva de género (en inglés, pronto disponible en español). Analiza las formas de violaciones y los tipos de perpetradores, hace referencia a las obligaciones relevantes en derechos humanos e incluye recomendaciones de políticas para los estados, corporaciones, la sociedad civil y donantes.

«Tejiendo la Resistencia a través de la Acción: Las Estrategias de las Defensoras de Derechos Humanos contra a las Industrias Extractivas» es una guía práctica que expone formas creativas y deliberadas de acción, tácticas exitosas e inspiradoras historias de resistencias.

El video «Defendiendo a las Personas y al Planeta: Mujeres Confrontando a las Industrias Extractivas» está protagonizado por defensoras de derechos humanos de África, Asia y América Latina, que comparten sus luchas por la tierra y la vida, y hablan de los riesgos y desafíos que enfrentan en su activismo.

So'oalo Roger
So'oalo was a fervent human rights advocate, especially pertaining to the rights of the LGBTQI community in the Pacific.
She was a member of the Samoa Fa’afafine Association (SFA) and a passionate advocate for the acknowledgement of a third gender in the island country. Under her leadership, the SFA pushed for the recognition of the validity and rights of the fa’afafine community.
She was also a pioneer in articulating the links between human rights, exploitation of fa’afafines in Samoa and the Pacific, and the health, wellbeing and security of the LGBTQI community.
She was an inspiration, a visionary and her dedication to the pursuit of rights for her community is admirable and will be remembered.
Maria Olivo
Maria is a graphic designer and visual communicator. Maria has worked with NGOs and Human Rights like Profamilia and OXFAM. As a woman of the Global South, she feels especially called to use her skills to work with organizations that help protect the wellbeing, as well the rights of millions of girls and women in Latin America.
Snippet FEA Sopo Japaridze (EN)
Meet Sopo Japaridze, fierce feminist, union leader and chair of the independent service trade union at the Solidarity Network.
She left the country when she was very young to go to the United States where she first became very politically active as a labor organizer. She kept Georgia in the back of her mind all that time, until one day, two decades later, she decided to return.
The existing Georgian union confederation back then was less than ideal. So, equipped with her skills, knowledge and labor organizing experience, Sopo went back to Georgia and built her own union.
Sopo is a passionate researcher and writer. She studies labor and social relations, writes for various publications and is the contributing editor of LeftEast, an Eastern European analytical platform. She also co-founded the political history initiative and podcast, Reimagining Soviet Georgia, where she explores the complexities and nuances of the country's experiences under the Soviet Union, to better understand its past in order to shed light on how to build a better future.

什麼是參與式評選過程(PSP)?
參與式評選過程是審查活動提案並將其選為正式論壇項目的最後一步。
參與式評選過程的運作模式:
- 活動提案最初是通過我們的“論壇活動徵集”提交的。這些提案面向有興趣展示其女權主義現實實踐的所有人(包括組織和個人)開放。
- 在所有提交的活動中,AWID工作人員會預先篩選出一些最能反映論壇主題並提出創新模式來吸引觀參與的活動。
- 然後由不同的論壇委員會對活動進行審查併決定入圍名單,從而保障不同地區、運動和想法的多樣性。
- 最後,被選定提案的個人和團體會對其他選定的提案進行審查和評分。得票最多的候選人的提案將成為最終論壇項目的一部分。

為什麼AWID決定在第14屆AWID論壇活動評選中採用PSP?
我們認為PSP與AWID論壇息息相關,因為:
- 它將決策過程的中心置於女權主義現實中的社區裡,這些社區將在論壇上進行展示和討論。
- 它與我們的身份以及我們作為運動的支持/陪伴組織的角色是一致的。
- 它與我們同不同的女權主義和社會正義運動共同創建的論壇願景是一致的,後者通過參與不同的委員會(內容和方法、可及性、運動家和東道國)與AWID合作,創建和促進活動來塑造論壇,並通過PSP做出關於項目的決策。

Samira Khalil
Samira fue una activista siria bajo el régimen de Bashar al-Asad.
Desde muy joven, se opuso a todas las formas de despotismo, especialmente en relación al régimen autoritario en el que vivía. En 2013, Samira fue secuestrada junto a otrxs tres destacadxs activistas. Se cree que se la llevaron del Centro para la Documentación de Violaciones de Duma, en el área rural de Damasco.
El principal sospechoso de su desaparición es el Ejército del Islam (el cual niega estar involucrado). No ha habido una investigación formal de la desaparición de Samira y desde entonces no se ha sabido nada de ella. Samira estaba comprometida con su país y se negaba a abandonar Siria hasta tanto no sintiera que su trabajo por el empoderamiento de las mujeres y en la documentación de los crímenes ya no fuera necesario.
Leila Hessini
Leila es una líder, defensora y consultora feminista transnacional, con más de veinticinco años de experiencia en la promoción de los derechos humanos, la igualdad de género y la justicia sexual y reproductiva en salud, derechos y justicia a nivel local y global. Leila nació en Argelia y se educó en Estados Unidos, Francia y Marruecos; a lo largo de su carrera profesional, ha vivido y trabajado en África, Europa y Estados Unidos.
Durante más de cinco años fue Vicepresidenta de Programas en el Fondo Global de Mujeres (GFW), supervisando el otorgamiento estratégico de subvenciones, el fortalecimiento de los movimientos, la incidencia global y las colaboraciones filantrópicas. En GFW duplicó las subvenciones otorgadas a más de 17 millones USD, inauguró el trabajo sobre movimientos feministas y de género en las crisis, creó un programa para niñas adolescentes liderado por un consejo asesor de niñas, y dirigió su trabajo de incidencia filantrópica. Antes de eso, entre 2002 y 2016 se desempeñó en el equipo de dirección de Ipas, donde publicó extensamente sobre derecho al aborto y justicia, lideró tareas de incidencia globales, y se asoció con grupos feministas que trabajan sobre gestión autónoma, movilización comunitaria y reducción de estigmas respecto de la integridad corporal y de los derechos sexuales y reproductivos. Mientras vivió en África del Norte, cofundó una empresa consultora feminista interseccional, Strategic Analysis for Gender Equality (SAGE), que trabajaba en las intersecciones de los derechos económicos, de género y sexuales y reproductivos, y dirigió el trabajo nacional, regional y mundial sobre género de la oficina de El Cairo de la Fundación Ford durante cinco años.
Leila tiene una vasta experiencia en educación popular, incidencia, organizaciones sin fines de lucro, juntas de desarrollo, filantropía, y monitoreo y evaluación. Es una hábil comunicadora comprometida con la utilización del enfoque interseccional para priorizar y difundir las voces y las experiencias de las personas más marginadas. Ha recibido la beca «Op-ed Public Voices» de la Fundación Ford, y fue becaria Fulbright en Marruecos. Sus publicaciones cubren una amplia gama de tópicos, incluyendo enfoques feministas y decoloniales a la filantropía, la promoción de los derechos humanos de las mujeres en contextos mayoritariamente musulmanes, estrategias feministas para impulsar la justicia reproductiva, el fomento de los abortos autogestionados, y la lucha contra los estigmas y la discriminación.

Leila tiene una Maestría en Salud Pública, y una Maestría en Estudios de Medio Oriente y Norte de África; ha estudiado derecho islámico en Marruecos, y cursó estudios doctorales en sociología en Francia. Ha estudiado árabe y alemán, habla francés e inglés en forma fluida.
Kunyit Asam: The Roots of Love and Resilience

The menstrual cycle usually lasts between 27 and 30 days. During this time, the period itself would only go on for five to seven days. During the period, fatigue, mood swings, and cramps are the result of inflammation.
In traditional Javanese culture, this is the moment for women to rest and take care of themselves. During this moment, a woman would take Kunyit Asam, a jamu or herbal drink to soothe the inflammation. This elixir consists of turmeric and tamarind boiled together in a pot.
I still remember my first period - it was one day before graduation day in elementary school. I remember pedaling my bike feeling something warm running between my thighs. When I arrived home I did all I could to clean myself and then put on a menstrual pad. My mother came home from work about four hours later. I told her what had happened. She looked me in the eye and asked how I felt. I told her that it was painful, that my body was swollen in every place. Then she asked me to go with her to the backyard. I followed her to our little jungle, my mother sat down on the soil and smiled.
“See this slender leaf? This is the leaf of Kunyit, *empon-empon that leaves the yellow stain on your fingers. What’s most important is not the leaf, but the roots. You dig the soil and slowly grab the roots.”, my mother showed me how to pick Kunyit or Turmeric roots. Then we went to the kitchen where she boiled water along with some tamarind. While waiting for it to boil, she showed me how to wash and grate the orangey-yellow root. Then, we put the grated turmeric into the boiling tamarind water. “Tomorrow, you can make it for yourself. This will help you to feel better!”.
I remember the first time I tasted it - a slightly bitter taste but also sour. My mother always served it warm. She would also put some in a big bottle which I would place on my stomach or lower back for further relief. For days after, my mother’s hands and mine were yellow. My friends could always tell every time I got period because my hands would be yellow.
A year after my first period, I found out that you could get the bottled version in convenience stores. Still, I made my own Kunyit Asam every time I had my period because the one in the convenience stores was cold. It did not smell of wet soil and warm kitchen.
Fast forward, I am a 26 year old woman who casually makes this drink for friends when they have their periods. I’ve made some for my housemates and I’ve delivered some for friends who live in different towns. I do not grow turmeric roots in my garden, but I have grown and shared the love from my mom. What was once from garden to cup is now from *pasar to cup.
A couple of days ago, I asked my mother who taught her how to make the jamu.
“Who else? Yang Ti*! Your grandmother was not just a teacher”, said my mom. I was never close to my grandmother. She passed away when I was eight. All I knew from my mom was that she was a math teacher who had to teach courses after work. I had this image of my grandmother as a hard worker who was kind of distant with her children. My mom did not disagree with that but explained it came from her survival instinct as a mother. “She tried to make time. She tried. She taught me how to make jamu so I could take care of myself and my sisters”.
My mother is the second child out of seven, six of whom are girls. The reason my grandmother taught her is so that all of her children could take care of each other. While my mother was taught how to make the drink, my mother’s older sister was taught how to plant turmeric. Yang Ti knew which one loved the smell of soil more and which one loved the smell of the kitchen. My mother was the latter. She learned how to plant from my aunt, her older sister.
My grandfather worked in a bank but he got laid off when he was in his 40s. So, my grandmother had to do a side-hustle to support their children. My mother was in high school at that time when Yang Ti woke her and her older sister up at dawn. “Would you help me to pick some roots?”. Of course nobody said no. Especially if it was your mother, especially if you were born in Javanese culture where saying “no” sounded like a bad word. Together, the three of them went to the backyard, and they harvested empon - empon, rhizome, that was buried inside the soil. She grew many kinds of rhizome; temu lawak, temu putih, ginger, galangal, kunci, kencur, and kunyit. That was the day where my mother realized that her mother was never far away from her.
That was the day where she could spend more time with her mother. There, in the garden. There, in the kitchen.
“We’re sending these for Ibu Darti, the lady who lives across the river. Kunyit Asam for her and her daughters.”, said my grandmother to my mother and my aunt that day. They poured the Turmeric-Tamarind warm drink into a tall thermos and later my grandmother would deliver it on the way to school.
Over time, my grandmother got more orders for jamu. Everybody in the family helped her to make and deliver her jamu. The small business lasted only a few years, but that was what paid for my mother and her siblings’ education.
Today, my mother, who got laid off just a few days before I wrote this piece, harvested Turmeric and other roots. She’s making her Turmeric Tamarind drink from her kitchen.
My phone rang in the middle of this afternoon, a couple minutes after I boiled the rest of my grated turmeric. Today is one day after my period.
“Ingka, have you washed your pot after boiling those turmeric? It would forever be yellow if you don’t wash it right away!”

*empon-empon = roots like ginger, turmeric, etc. coming from the Javanese word “Empu” which means, something or someone that has deep knowledge.

Efua Dorkenoo
Affectueusement connue sous le nom de « Mama Efua », Efua a lutté contre les mutilations génitales féminines (MGF) pendant trois décennies et a contribué à attirer l'attention et l'action de la communauté internationale pour mettre fin à cette pratique néfaste.
En 1983, Efua a cofondé FORWARD (fondation pour la santé, la recherche et le développement des femmes), qui est devenue une organisation de premier plan dans la lutte contre les MGF. Son livre intitulé « Cutting the Rose: Female Genital Mutilation » (couper la rose), publié en 1994, est considéré comme le premier ouvrage sur les mutilations génitales féminines. Il figure parmi « Les 100 meilleurs livres africains du XXe siècle » de l’Université de Columbia.
Originaire du Ghana et infirmière de formation, Efua a rejoint l'OMS en 1995 et a réussi à faire en sorte que les mutilations génitales féminines fassent partie des agendas politiques des États membres de l'OMS. Elle a également travaillé en étroite collaboration avec le gouvernement nigérian pour élaborer une politique nationale globale qui servirait de base légale aux lois nigérianes contre les mutilations et qui est toujours en vigueur à ce jour.
Son travail de pionnière a abouti à une campagne menée par l'Afrique intitulée « The Girl Generation », qui s'est engagée à mettre fin aux MGF en une génération. Efua a montré comment une seule personne peut devenir la voix unificatrice d'un mouvement : « Une identité partagée peut aider à rassembler des activistes d'horizons différents dans un but commun ». Ces mots, emplis de sagesse, sont plus pertinents que jamais.
Fatima Qureshi
A nomad of cultures, born in Hong Kong, rooted in Turkish-Pakistani heritage, Fatima’s love for narratives - both in reading and co-creating them - fueled her passion for communications activism. Supported by her education in journalism, Fatima has worked for 7 years in digital and media communications fields with NGOs that provide education opportunities and legal aid to refugee and asylum seekers, as well as with the Muslim feminist movement which applies feminist and rights-based lenses in understanding and searching for equality and justice within Muslim legal tradition. She is a regular op-ed writer on feminist issues in the Global South.
Through storytelling in this hyper-digital age of social media, Fatima continues to collaborate with community organizers and grassroots activists to create audiovisual content with the aim to cultivate bridges of understanding towards collective liberation and decolonization. On days when she’s not working, she intently watches independent feminist films coming from Iran, Morocco and Pakistan and on other days, she performs spoken word poetry with her comrades in Kuala Lumpur.

Pleasure Garden Exhibition
The artwork is a photography and illustration collaboration between Siphumeze and Katia during lockdown. The work looks at black queer sex and plesure narratives, bondage, safe sex, toys, mental health and sex and many more. It was created to accompany the Anthology Touch.



About the Artists:

She is creative director of HOLAAfrica! a pan-Africanist womanist online collective.
Her solo and collaborative performance work has been featured in a number of festivals and theatre spaces such as Ricca Ricca Festival in Japan
She directed two Naledi nominated productions in 2017 and 2018. She directed a show that won a Standard Bank Ovation award in 2020.
As a photographer she was part of a group exhibition titled Flowers of my Soul in Italy organised by the Misfit Project. Produced three publications for HOLAAfrica and was published in and provided the cover for volume two: As You Like of the Gerald Kraak Anthologies.

One of her most lovely and vivaciously titled works, Universe Protector, portrays the black soul as a divine entity full of strength, power, and greatness. In her youth, her love of graphic design was stimulated by her parents’ artistry and the Photoshop they had downloaded on their computer for their professional photography.
