In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.

What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:

And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Three Boats, a Horse and a Taxi: Pacific Feminists at the AWID Forums
This story is about how an increasingly diverse group of feminists from the Pacific organized through the years to attend the AWID Forums and how that process changed them personally, as organizations, and as a movement through what they learned, discovered and experienced. It illustrates the importance of the Forums as a space through which a region that tends to be marginalized or ignored at the global level can build a strong presence in the feminist movement that is then replicated at other international women’s rights spaces.

Manal Tamimi es una activista y defensora de los derechos humanos palestina. Tiene cuatro hijxs y posee una maestría en derecho humanitario internacional. Debido a su activismo, fue arrestada en tres ocasiones y sufrió más de una herida, incluso balas explosivas reales, algo prohibido en el plano internacional. Su familia también es blanco de agresiones: sus hijxs han sido arrestados y sufrido heridas con munición activa más de una vez. El último hecho fue un intento de asesinato contra su hijo Muhammad, quien recibió un disparo en el pecho cerca del corazón, unas semanas después de ser liberado de las prisiones de la ocupación en las que había estado dos años. Su filosofía de vida: si tengo que pagar un precio por ser palestina y no por un delito que haya cometido, me niego a morir callada.
Salir del clóset en el momento culminante de mi vida: El Foro de Feminismos Negros
Muchxs participantes experimentan los Foros de AWID como un singular espacio de libertad, donde son acogidxs y celebradxs tal como son. En un mundo donde incluso lxs feministas más privilegiadxs a menudo encuentran que no encajan del todo, para aquellas personas cuyas identidades son criminalizadas o de alguna manera condenadas en sus contextos cotidianos esta experiencia de libertad y celebración puede ser profundamente transformadora (y reparadora). La historia de cómo OluTimehin Kukoyi (que participaba por primera vez) vivió el Foro de Feminismos Negros y el Foro de AWID de Bahía (2016) ilustra esto con mucha potencia.
Co-Creating a Political Home for Feminist Movements
From 27 - 30 April, 2026, AWID will be at the Women Deliver 2026 Conference, co-creating a political home with feminist and gender justice movements that is rooted in transnational care and solidarity.
In a time when fascism and militarization continue to rise globally, feminist connection and solidarity across borders is what we truly need. We are organizing multiple spaces at Women Deliver and online to connect movements with each other in conversations to build feminist agendas of solidarity and action.
