Women Human Rights Defenders

WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.

The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.

Risks and threats targeting WHRDs  

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:

  • Physical assault and death
  • Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
  • Judicial harassment and criminalization
  • Burnout

A collaborative, holistic approach to safety

We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership

  • to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
  • to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk

We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:

  • emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
  • documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
  • promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
  • building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles

Our Actions

We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

  • Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to  strengthen  responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

  • Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

  • Increasing the visibility and recognition of  WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

  • Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Madiha was a prominent Professor of Sociology who actively engaged with civil society as an advocate for women’s rights in the Arab region.

She chaired the Alliance for Arab Women and was a member of the Committee on Civil Society and the Committee on the Development of Minia Governorate with the National Council for Women. She produced numerous papers that shed light on, and analyzed, gender inequalities and discrimination against women.

She is remembered fondly by colleagues, students and friends.

Biography

Eni Lestari est travailleuse domestique indonésienne à Hong Kong et militante des droits des migrant·e·s. Après avoir échappé à son employeur abusif, elle est passée de victime à mobilisatrice de travailleurs·ses domestiques en particulier, et de travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s plus globalement. En 2000, elle a fondé l'Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (Association des travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s indonésien·ne·s, ATKI-Hong Kong) qui s'est ensuite étendue à Macao, à Taïwan et en Indonésie. Elle a été coordonnatrice et porte-parole de l'Asia Migrants Coordinating Body (Instance de coordination des migrant·e·s en Asie, AMCB) - une alliance d'organisations de terrain de migrant·e·s à Hong Kong venant d'Indonésie, des Philippines, de Thaïlande, du Népal et du Sri Lanka. Elle est également l'actuelle présidente de l’International Migrants Alliance (Alliance internationale des migrant·e·s), la toute première alliance mondiale de migrant·e·s, d'immigré·e·s, de réfugié·e·s et d'autres personnes déplacées.

Elle a occupé des postes importants dans diverses organisations, en tant que membre actuelle du conseil régional de l’Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (Forum Asie-Pacifique sur les femmes, le droit et le développement, APWLD), ancienne membre du conseil d'administration de Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (Alliance mondiale contre la traite des femmes, GAATW), porte-parole du Network of Indonesian Migrant Workers (Réseau des travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s indonésien·ne·s, JBMI), conseillère d’ATKI-Hong Kong et Macao ainsi que de l’Association of Returned Migrants and Families in Indonesia (Association des migrant·e·s et des familles retourné·e·s en Indonésie, KABAR BUMI). Elle a été une personne-ressource impliquée dans des forums organisés par des universitaires, des groupes interreligieux, des sociétés civiles, des syndicats et bien d'autres, à l’échelle nationale, régionale et internationale.

Elle a aussi participé activement aux assemblées/conférences des Nations Unies sur le développement et les droits des migrant·e·s et été choisie comme intervenante pour l'ouverture de l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies sur les mouvements massifs de migrant·e·s et de réfugié·e·s en 2016 à New York, aux États-Unis. Des nominations et des prix lui ont par ailleurs été décernés, dont celui d’Inspirational Women de BBC 100 Women, ainsi que le prix Public Hero de RCTI, l’Indonesian Club Award et le Non-Profit Leader of Women of Influence de la Chambre américaine de Hong Kong, et celui de Changemaker de Cathay Pacific.

Todos estos lugares autoorganizados se conectarán en forma virtual con la sede del Foro en Bangkok. Como en el caso de las personas que se conecten en línea, lxs participantes de los nodos podrán facilitar actividades, unirse a conversaciones y disfrutar de un programa rico y diverso.

Chinelo Onwualu Snippet

Chinelo Onwualu is an editorial consultant with nearly 10 years of experience in crafting strategic communications for nonprofits across the world. Her clients have included ActionAid Nigeria, The BBC World Trust, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), and AWID. She has a master’s degree in Journalism from Syracuse University and has worked as a writer, editor, and researcher in Nigeria, Canada, and the United States. She is also the non-fiction editor of Anathema magazine and co-founder of Omenana, a magazine of African Speculative Fiction. Her short stories have been featured in several award-winning anthologies and she’s been nominated for the British Science Fiction Awards, the Nommo Awards for African Speculative Fiction, and the Short Story Day Africa Award. She’s from Nigeria but lives in Toronto with her partner and child.

Biography

Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru es una consumada estratega internacional en recursos humanos con gran influencia en la región del Cuerno de África. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como gerente regional de Oficina y Recursos Humanos en Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA, Iniciativa Estratégica para las Mujeres del Cuerno de África). Su influencia se extiende a la dirección de los recursos humanos de más de 70 empleades regionales, debido a que los ingresos anuales de la organización registraron un veloz crecimiento del 40%. A lo largo de su carrera, Jemimah ha organizado iniciativas de reclutamiento sumamente fructíferas, introducido sistemas de desempeño basados en el mérito, y supervisado las relaciones entre el personal y las políticas de recursos humanos. Desempeñó una función crucial brindando apoyo a las estrategias de fuerzas de trabajo globales. Con antecedentes académicos en Estudios sobre el Desarrollo de la Universidad de Makerere (Uganda) y una maestría en Gestión de Recursos Humanos en curso, el compromiso de Jemimah con el desarrollo profesional es más que evidente. CFA 2023 - Suggested Activities Format - ES

Formatos de actividad sugeridos

 

Panel: en las discusiones de panel, explora un tema o un desafío desde diferentes perspectivas, o comparte un aprendizaje o una experiencia, con preguntas del público a continuación, si el tiempo lo permite.

Programa de entrevistas: puedes tener una conversación más espontánea al estilo de un programa de entrevistas. Estos programas de entrevistas pueden ser una conversación entre varias personas, facilitadas por la persona que presenta el programa. Las preguntas del público pueden determinar la dirección de la conversación.

Conversación: estas pueden tomar la forma de «world café», de pecera y de otras metodologías que facilitan el involucramiento activo de lxs participantes en las conversaciones. Es un formato sumamente participativo.

Taller: actividades o clases interactivas que invitan a lxs participantes a adquirir nuevas habilidades en cualquiera y todas las áreas de la vida y el activismo.

Sesión estratégica: esta es una invitación a pensar en profundidad sobre un tema o una estrategia, junto con otras personas. Un espacio para aprender unxs de otrxs: qué funciona, qué no funciona, y cómo desarrollamos estrategias nuevas y colectivas para crear los mundos que soñamos.

Círculo para compartir [«birds of a feather»]: ideal para grupos pequeños, en un ambiente más íntimo, para oírse unxs a otrxs, iniciar una conversación y tratar con cuidado temas que pueden ser específicos, sensibles y complejos.

Artes – Taller participativo: actividades participativas de arte y expresión creativa. Ya sea a través de artes visuales, teatro, cine, pintura mural, danza, música, creación de artesanías y obras de arte colectivas, etc., apreciamos todas las ideas que celebren el arte y la creatividad feministas como formas de cambio social, sanación, expresión y transformación.

Artes – Performances, instalaciones y exhibiciones: son bienvenidas todas las propuestas que ofrezcan a lxs participantes del Foro nuevas experiencias y perspectivas, que expandan nuestros horizontes y que nos desafíen e inspiren para pensar, sentir y organizarnos de manera innovadora.

Sanación: actividades diversas diseñadas tanto para grupos como para personas individuales: desde aprender técnicas de relajación hasta hablar sobre la prevención del desgaste, desde prácticas informadas por el trauma para el cuidado de nuestro cuerpo, nuestra mente y nuestra alma hasta la reparación de fisuras dentro de nuestros movimientos.

Stella a commencé sa carrière au ministère du Genre et du Développement communautaire en Ouganda. Elle œuvrait auprès des décideurs-euses politiques, pour encourager des réformes législatives, dont celle de la Constitution ougandaise en 1995 qui a entériné certaines des réformes les plus progressives pour les femmes dans la région.

Elle était adorée dans la région tout entière pour ses incessants efforts pour la création et l’application de lois et politiques sensibles au genre. Elle a joué un rôle clé dans l’ébauche de la loi sur les violences domestiques en Ouganda. Elle a aussi contribué à une mobilisation importante en faveur de Constitutions sensibles au genre à la fois en Ouganda et au Rwanda.

Par son travail au Centre international de recherches sur les femmes (International Center for Research on Women, ICRW), elle a abordé les thématiques de la violence à l’égard des enfants. Stella s’est attachée à renforcer les organisations locales qui luttent contre les violences basées sur le genre. Conférencière en Droits genrés et loi à l’université Makerere, elle a également siégé aux conseils d’administration d’Akina Mama wa Afrika, ActionAid International Uganda et l’Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa.

Originaire de la cordillère des Andes, Brenda Salas est un·e stratège féministe queer. Iel œuvre à changer les discours et mobiliser les ressources pour soutenir les mouvements de justice raciale et climatique dans le monde entier. Brenda a produit de nombreux projets de communication pour exalter le pouvoir des migrant·e·s et dénoncer les interventions militaires américaines en Amérique latine avec Deep Dish TV et le Portland Central America Solidarity Committee (Comité de Solidarité avec l’Amérique centrale de Portland). Fier·ère d’être membre de l’Audre Lorde Project, iel est titulaire d’un diplôme du mouvement United World Colleges (UWC).

Rocky showed inspirational leadership and direction in working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Brotherboy and Sistergirl (LGBTIQBBSG) youth at risk.

Rocky started her career with the Queensland Police Service as a Police Liaison Officer. Making a difference was important to her. She led an impressive career working with young LGBTIQBBSG people as the Manager of Open Doors Youth Service.

Rocky worked through complex situations with clients relating specifically to gender and sexual identity. She was a natural in this line of work - a strong community leader, a quiet achiever, a loyal friend, a compassionate nurturer, and a change maker. Rocky was a founding member of IndigiLez Leadership and Support Group.

In 2016 at the Supreme Court in Brisbane, Former High Court Justice Michael Kirby mentioned Rocky by name when praising the work of the LGBTI Legal Service over the years. Rocky fought extremely hard for the human rights of the LGBTIQBBSG community, pushed boundaries and created change in a respectful, loving way.
