Women Human Rights Defenders

WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.

The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.

Risks and threats targeting WHRDs  

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:

  • Physical assault and death
  • Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
  • Judicial harassment and criminalization
  • Burnout

A collaborative, holistic approach to safety

We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership

  • to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
  • to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk

We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:

  • emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
  • documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
  • promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
  • building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles

Our Actions

We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

  • Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to  strengthen  responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

  • Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

  • Increasing the visibility and recognition of  WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

  • Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

With avenues for civil society (especially those not based in Geneva) to participate in the Human Rights Council becoming more limited because of the financial crisis, spaces to put pressure and hold governments accountable for rights violations are increasingly closed. These measures include charges for hybrid participation and interpretation for side events, visa obstacles, and the limited availability of hybrid informal negotiations on draft resolutions.

Cynthia Cockburn was a feminist sociologist, writer, academic, photographer and peace activist.

She explored the gendered aspects of violence and conflict and made significant contributions to the peace movement through her exploration of the themes of masculinity and violence as well as her local and international activism.

Cynthia brought a feminist power analysis to militarisation and war, and was among the academics whose writings and analysis clearly demonstrated how gender-based violence played a key part in perpetuating war. Working closely with peace activists in countries experiencing conflict, her findings covered diverse contexts including Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel/Palestine, South Korea, Japan, Spain and the UK. She helped bring in her research and academic writings, an understanding that violence was experienced as a continuum of time and scale and perceived very differently when seen from a gendered lens.

In her words, “Gender helps us to see the continuity, the connection between instances of violence.” 

Cynthia bridged her research with the activism she did locally and internationally with movements for demilitarisation, disarmament and peace. She helped start the Greenham Common women’s peace camp, which advocated for universal nuclear disarmament in Britain and was part of establishing the London chapter of Women in Black.

Over the decades, Cynthia organized and participated in local weekly vigils and the political choir Raised Voices, singing in the choir, and writing several of the lyrics to the songs that have made up its repertoire. She was also active in the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the European Forum of Socialist Feminists as well as in Women Against Fundamentalism.

Cynthia was born in July 1934 and passed away in September 2019 at the age of 85.

L’AWID EN 2014 : Renforcer les processus d’organisation en faveur des droits des femmes dans le monde entier

L’AWID a le plaisir de partager son rapport annuel 2014.

Du renforcement des connaissances sur les enjeux liés aux droits des femmes à l’élaboration de réponses plus efficaces aux violences perpétrées contre les défenseuses des droits humains, nos efforts de l’an dernier n’ont cessé de poursuivre la consolidation des mouvements féministes et de droits des femmes du monde entier.

Consultez le rapport pour en apprendre davantage sur la façon dont nous avons renforcé les capacités de nos membres et plus largement de notre public , exercé de fortes pressions pour que les droits des femmes demeurent au premier plan des principaux processus internationaux relatifs au développement et aux droits humains, et contribué à améliorer la couverture médiatique des problématiques des droits des femmes et des processus organisationnels qui y sont liés. Le rapport propose une vue panoramique de nos projets ainsi que certains chiffres qui témoignent concrètement de notre impact.

La collaboration est au cœur de toutes nos actions et nous anticipons avec enthousiasme une autre année de travail ensemble afin de mener nos mouvements vers un niveau supérieur.

Coup d'oeil à l'intérieur du rapport

Dans un contexte de plus en plus exigeant, nous pouvons néanmoins discerner d’importants signes d’espoir de voir les priorités relatives aux droits des femmes progresser. Les activistes des droits des femmes jouent toujours un rôle crucial dans la création d’espaces au sein desquels il est possible d’exiger des changements structurels, de soutenir les communautés, de s’opposer à la violence et de préserver les acquis essentiels/ importants/majeurs. Il y a en effet des occasions à saisir pour influencer les nouveaux acteurs et mobiliser des ressources plus abondantes en faveur des organisations de droits des femmes.

Pour ce faire, il est essentiel de mener de solides actions collectives et de renforcer le processus d’organisation des activistes des droits des femmes.

Elle a travaillé comme programmatrice de films pour l’association Metropolis Cinema à Beyrouth et coordonne aujourd’hui le projet Reel Streams qui vise à soutenir la diffusion du cinéma indépendant dans la région arabe. Elle est responsable de la programmation du Soura Film Festival, un festival de films queer centré sur la région S.W.A.N.A., écrit des critiques de films pour Manifesto XXI et est depuis peu commissaire de films et de festivals pour Cinema Akil.

Hevrin Khalaf fue una destacada líder política siria-kurda de la región autónoma de Rojava, donde las mujeres kurdas están arriesgando sus vidas para resistir la ofensiva turca y construir un sistema feminista.

Hevrin fue Secretaria General del Future Syria Party [Partido de la Futura Siria] (FSP, por sus siglas en inglés), un grupo que tenía como objetivo la construcción de puentes, la reconciliación entre diferentes grupos étnicos y el trabajo hacia una "Siria democrática, pluralista y descentralizada".

Hevrin fue un símbolo de este esfuerzo de reconciliación. También trabajó para promover la igualdad entre mujeres y hombres y fue una representante para periodistas, trabajadorxs de ayuda humanitaria y diplomáticxs que visitaban la región.

Hevrin era también una ingeniera civil de Derik, y fue una de las fundadoras de Foundation for Science and Free Though [(Fundación para la Ciencia y el Libre Pensamiento] en 2012.

El 12 de octubre de 2019 fue torturada y asesinada por la milicia Ahrar al-Sharqiya, sustentada por Turquía, durante una operación militar contra las Fuerzas Democráticas Sirias en Rojava.

Diana Isabel Hernández Juárez était une enseignante, défenseure des droits humains et activiste pour l’environnement et les communautés guatémaltèque. Elle coordonnait le programme environnemental de la paroisse de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, sur la côte sud du Guatemala. 

Diana a dévoué sa vie à co-créer des actions de sensibilisation à l’environnement, en étroite collaboration avec les communautés locales, dans le but de résoudre les problèmes environnementaux et protéger les ressources naturelles. Elle a été à l’initiative de projets de pépinières forestières, de fermes municipales, de jardins familiaux et de campagnes de nettoyage. Active dans les programmes de reboisement, elle s’est efforçée de récupérer des espèces locales et de remédier aux pénuries d’eau dans plus de 32 communautés rurales.

Le 7 septembre 2019, Diana a été assassinée par balle par deux hommes armés inconnus alors qu’elle participait à une procession dans sa localité. Diana n’avait que 35 ans au moment de son décès.

2023: Fierce Feminisms: Together We Rise

For us at AWID, 2023 was the first year of our new Strategic Plan, “Fierce Feminisms: Together We Rise”, which speaks to the unapologetic drive needed to change the world, and the plurality of feminisms and movements in our ecosystem.

In the course of 2023, the volatile situation in Sudan has escalated greatly. The unspeakable genocide in Gaza, in the context of ongoing colonization and occupation of Palestine, continues as we write these lines. Climate crises, militarization, and extractivism all persist as threats to people and the planet. Building stronger movements and people power is a vision to which we contribute daily, through AWID membership, teach-ins, resourcing advocacy and more.

Ester est diplômée en théâtre contemporain – processus créatifs (à la FAINC) et en danse et conscience du corps (à l’USCS). Parmi ses spécialisations musicales figurent le chant populaire et les percussions. Elle a suivi une formation à Novos Brincantes avec Flaira Ferro, Mateus Prado et Antonio Meira à l’Institut Brincante en 2015 et 2016.

Fadila M. was a Soulaliyate tribal activist from Azrou, the Ifrane region of Morocco. She fought against a specific form of land discrimination directed against tribal women.

As part of the Soulaliyate Women’s Land-Use Rights Movement, she worked towards overhauling the framework legislation relating to the management of community property through the 2019 adoption of three projects of laws guaranteeing the equality of women and men.

According to the customary laws in force, women had no right to benefit from the land, especially those who were single, widowed or divorced. The rights to collective land in Morocco were transmitted traditionally between male members of a family of over 16 years of age. Since 2007, Fadila M. had been part of the women’s movement, the first grassroots nationwide mobilization for land rights. Some of the achievements included that in 2012 for the first time Soulaliyate women were able to register on the lists of beneficiaries and to benefit from compensation relating to land cession. The movement also managed to get the 1919 dahir (Moroccan King's decree) amended to guarantee women the right to equality.

Fadila M. died on 27 September 2018. The circumstances of her death are unclear. She was part of a protest march connected to the issue of collective land and while authorities reported her death as being accidental, and her having a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, the local section of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) pointed out that Fadila was suffocated by a member of the police force using a Moroccan flag. Her family requested investigation but the results of the autopsy were not known.

Inna Michaeli

Biography

Inna est une activiste et sociologue féministe queer comptant de nombreuses années d'engagement profond dans les luttes féministes et LGBTQI+, l'éducation politique et l'organisation par et pour les femmes migrantes, ainsi que la libération de la Palestine et la solidarité avec cette dernière. Inna a rejoint l'AWID en 2016 et occupé différents postes, dont celui de directrice des programmes plus récemment. Basée à Berlin, en Allemagne, elle a grandi à Haïfa, en Palestine/Israël, et est née à Saint-Pétersbourg en Russie. Elle porte ces territoires politiques et cette résistance au passé et au présent colonial dans son féminisme et sa solidarité transnationale.

Inna est l'auteure de « Women's Economic Empowerment: Feminism, Neoliberalism, and the State » (« L'autonomisation Économique des Femmes : Féminisme, Néolibéralisme et l’État », Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), un ouvrage basé sur une thèse qui lui a valu un doctorat de l'Université Humboldt de Berlin. En tant qu'universitaire, elle a enseigné des cours sur la mondialisation, la production de connaissances, l'identité et l'appartenance. Inna est titulaire d'un master en études culturelles de l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem. Elle a été membre du conseil d'administration de +972 Advancement of Citizen Journalism, et l’est actuellement pour Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East (en Allemagne). Auparavant, Inna a travaillé avec la Coalition des Femmes pour la Paix et est une passionnée de la mobilisation des ressources pour l'activisme populaire.
